US Agricultural Cooperatives Form Strategic Coalition to Scale Rural Broadband
MINNEAPOLIS, MN — June 2, 2026 — A coalition of major farmer-owned cooperatives in the Midwest has launched a joint venture to expand high-speed fiber broadband across rural farming communities.
The initiative leverages existing coop right-of-way permissions and utility infrastructure to lay fiber-optic lines directly to farms and agricultural processing plants. The expanded bandwidth is intended to support the data-intensive requirements of modern precision agriculture, including real-time telemetry from connected tractors, cloud-connected grain bin sensors, and high-volume data sharing from autonomous drone flights.
Enabling Digital Farm Infrastructure
Many rural agricultural regions in the US continue to face connectivity bottlenecks, preventing growers from utilizing the full potential of digital agriculture software. By establishing cooperative-backed local networks, the coalition aims to lower subscription costs for rural members and speed up regional infrastructure deployment.
"High-speed internet is no longer a luxury; it is a vital agricultural input," said David Miller, spokesman for the cooperative coalition. "By working together as cooperatives, we can invest in infrastructure that national carriers overlook, ensuring our farmer-members remain competitive in a digital agricultural economy."
