ClearLeaf's Dr. Agustín Büchert on Rethinking Crop Protection with GotaBlanca

ClearLeaf CSO Dr. Agustín Büchert discusses GotaBlanca's silver-based antimicrobial crop protection, efficacy, and regulatory tailwinds.

Introduction — ClearLeaf, the Central American agri-innovation company behind the GotaBlanca line of sustainable crop protection products, is rethinking how farmers defend yield without compromising soil, food safety, or human health. In this exclusive conversation, Dr. Agustín Büchert, Chief Scientific Officer and Co-founder of ClearLeaf, discusses the science behind the company’s chemistry, its R&D roadmap, and where ClearLeaf fits into a global crop-protection industry under accelerating regulatory and commercial pressure.

AgFoodNews.com: ClearLeaf's GotaBlanca line claims broad-spectrum efficacy against pre- and post-harvest pathogens without the toxicity profile of conventional chemistries. Can you walk us through the mode of action — what is actually happening at the plant or pathogen level, and why has this approach been hard for incumbents to replicate?

Dr. Agustín Büchert: GotaBlanca's active ingredient is elemental silver, one of the most studied antimicrobial substances in history, formulated as microparticles suspended in a proprietary copolymer matrix. The way it works is straightforward: when the silver particles come into contact with moisture on the plant surface or on harvested produce, they release a tiny, very localized pulse of silver ions. Those ions attack the pathogen at the point of contact through several mechanisms simultaneously.

The reason this matters for farmers is twofold. First, because the silver attacks through multiple pathways at once, pathogens cannot develop resistance to it. That is a massive advantage...

AgFoodNews.com: Biological and low-toxicity crop protection products have historically struggled with two things: consistent field performance and shelf stability. How has ClearLeaf engineered around those constraints?

Dr. Agustín Büchert: We engineered around both of those constraints by design. GotaBlanca is not a living organism. It is an inorganic, contact-action formulation. There is no viability window, no cold chain requirement, no sensitivity to UV or temperature swings. The active ingredient is elemental silver... suspended in a copolymer matrix designed for long shelf life and consistent dispersion.
